Seahorses are marvelous creatures. They have the name, hippocampus. Meaning monsters of the sea. Seahorses mate for their entire lives. They are the only species in the world where the male bears the unborn young. These fish can get up to .6 to 14 inches. The males have something in their front side called a brood pouch. That's where the female lays the eggs. The male keeps them there until birth. Seahorses often die of exhaustion when caught in waves. They propel themselves with fins on their back that flutter 35 times per second. Have you ever wondered why they have the curly tails? That's because they hook themselves onto rocks and coral to keep them from floating around in the waves. We need to protect the water. Pollution has caused seahorses to become almost extinct.
Because of all the litter and pollution in the ocean, seahorses have almost gone extinct. Seahorses like other sea animals need a clean, trash free environment. Seahorses rely on the rock and coral in the ocean. We also need to take care of that too. Remember, what might be trash to you, is poison to the sea animals.
